The heforshe gender equality campaign In 2012 (often referred to as He for She) is a solidarity campaign for the advancement of gender equality, initiated by UN. Its goal is to achieve equality by encouraging all genders to partake as agents of change and take action against negative stereotypes and behaviours. In Cuffs Episode 1 both men and women can be apart of the police force and they all get treated the same; no one is more entitled than others. For example Donna Prager, a strong female in the police force, always gets the job done.
The legalisation of gay marriages in the uk allowed civil partnerships to be converted into marriages, and allow married people to change their legal gender while remaining married, came into force on 10 December 2014. Same-sex marriages in England and Wales began at midnight on 29 March 2014. This influenced cuffs as Jake, one of the new officers, announced to another male officer (Ryan) that he was gay. There was no initial reaction as he was calm about it and there definitely was acceptance, Ryan was completely engaged into the conversation the only reaction he got was when the someone spoke into the radio.
The development of multiculturalism in the UK 2010 consisted of two or more cultures, meaning that contemporary Britain is clearly multicultural, even without its ethnic minorities. However, the term has clearly come to mean a society with cultures, including ethnic minorities, living side by side. Because of the increase in Xenophobia (fear of immigrants) people have developed stereotypes for certain religions. For example, some people are scared of Muslims as they see all Muslims as terrorists. With cuffs adding a Muslim police officer, it goes against all the false accusations of all Muslims and proves that not all Muslims are terrorists.
The rise in shoplifting In Brighton during 2010. Shoplifting is the act of knowingly taking goods from an establishment in which they are displayed for sale, without paying for them. The total number of thefts from city shops has risen each year from 1,832 in 2010 to 2,028 in 2013 - representing an overall increase of more than 10%. Last year, however, saw a drop in the number of incidents officially considered “solved” by Sussex Police to 1,053 - the lowest rate of the last four years, with 1,176 solved in 2012, 1,138 in 2011 and 1,126 in 2010.Linking to cuffs, A woman outside a shopping centre was running from the police. There are 4 police officers after her, and a security guard , and by the end -after putting her in handcuffs- she starts to take her cloths off. This then lead to the woman trying to get Jake (the person who put the handcuffs on her) to grab his hand and place it on her and by now almost everyone has got their phones out recording. The rise in hate crime especially due to the rising of Isis in 2014. Police in Manchester and London registered surges in anti-Muslim hate crime in the immediate aftermaths of the Manchester Arena bombing and the London Bridge attack.
The number of Islamophobic attacks in Manchester went up five fold in the week after the concert bombing, with 139 incidents reported to Tell Mama, the group recording Islamophobic crimes, compared to 25 incidents the previous week.Police chiefs said there had also been a short-term spike in London before this week’s Fins-bury Park mosque attack – although precise data is not yet available.Police forces around the country have stepped up protection for Muslim communities in the wake of the Fins-bury Park attack, with the home secretary, Amber Rudd, pledging that the extra resource will remain in place “for as long as it is needed”. This links to Cuffs as i said before they are trying to involve as many cultures as possible to show how culturally different and accepting they are. Police are meant to be the good people and by the producers reflecting on social context at that time, many more people would relate/ know where they were coming from -which attracts more readers/views-.
Rise in migrants and immigrants (this year). Between mid-1991 and mid-2016, net migration accounted for 55% of total population growth in the UK—an additional 4.5 million people. In the year to mid-2017, it accounted for almost 60%, based on ONS data.
